Apple Pay Face Challenge as CVS, Rite Aid Reject System (Bloomberg)

  • CVS and Rite Aid have blocked Apple Pay at their stores
  • Both chains are part of a larger Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) that includes Walmart, Lowes, Target, and Best Buy.
  • MCX also has a mobile based payment system in development
  • How could Apple respond to a wider blockage of Apple Pay by the Merchant Customer Exchange?

The Beacon Group offers its entry-level Consultant position as an opportunity to learn and assess a career in strategy consulting. During the Consultant’s first year, he/she will focus on the core elements of our craft: research, writing, project delivery, and business development. Team-based project delivery with frequent client interactions is the model within which a new Consultant hire quickly becomes immersed.

After mastery of the entry-level Consultant position, top performers become eligible for promotion to a Senior Consultant position. At this level, the second set of craft fundamentals are taught and explored: presentation skills, time management, and project management.

Within 30 to 48 months of a Consultant’s hire, a formal review is given to assess progress and future career opportunities with the firm. Top Senior Consultants who have demonstrated outstanding capabilities and a strong interest in a longer-term future at Beacon may earn a promotion to Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

A Consultant will hold a variety of responsibilities including:

  • Market-based primary research conducted over the telephone
  • Synthesis and analysis of original research
  • Business/presentation writing
  • Use of analytical tools and strategic frameworks
  • Participation in client presentations
  • Involvement in one to three client accounts as part of a business development team

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate has shown the ability to research thoroughly under tight deadlines and write clearly and concisely. In addition, he/she has shown the ability to learn a set of domain knowledge in a certain period of time, and then communicate that knowledge in an articulate fashion.

A Bachelor’s degree and foreign language skills are required. Proficiency in Portuguese, Japanese, and Arabic are highly preferred. No previous business experience is necessary.

2015 Intensive Internship Training Bootcamp

We are happy to announce the 2015 Intensive Internship Training Bootcamp. Modeled after the Summer Intensive Training Program, this program will take place from January 5th to January 23rd (3 weeks), and will be limited to 4 graduate student participants. Participants will be selected through short (15 min) interviews. The Bootcamp is designed to prepare participants for upcoming internship applications at top consulting firms.

Content & Value:

  • 3 week program (January 5th to January 23rd)
  • Receive case and fit interview guidance (e.g., checklist to be completed before bootcamp)
  • Weekly group meetings for fit and case practice with students who have received full-time consulting offers at top firms
  • Match with a buddy who has already received a full-time consulting offer
  • Connect with motivated peers going through the same recruiting process

Expectations:

  • 2 hours of team meetings per week (1 hour fit interview, 1 hour case practice)
  • Attendance is mandatory at every meeting
  • Practice at least one case per day with a case partner
  • Give your best – we give our best to offer this program, we expect the same in return

Crude oil prices have hit a 4 year low in the last few weeks ($74/barrel Brent, $77.5/barrel WTI) which has had impacts throughout the global economy. Below are a few stories on industries immediately affected.

Shale jubilation fades as oil price falls undercut model (Financial Times)

  • The higher cost shale oil production is dependent on higher oil prices to sustain a healthy margin
  • This sector was especially strong when oil prices were over $100/barrel
  • How do shale oil producers adjust their operations to respond to this industry-wide decrease in revenue?
  • For example, an older opinion piece (Oct 23 WSJ) refers to new technology implementation to increase yields / decrease variable costs.

Falling Crude Oil Prices Could Begin To Hurt Caterpillar (Forbes)

  • Overall, Caterpillar (CAT) is facing low revenue growth at 1% (Oct 27 Forbes), with major growth coming from supplying customers in the energy sector
  • With oil prices at current lows, the oil producers that CAT is supporting may reduce new purchases over existing equipment
  • Are there countries or sectors of the economy that would have increased demand for CAT machines now that crude prices are lowered?

Gilead hepatitis-C drug wins CVS/Caremark backing (Financial Times)

Description: Work closely with the project steering committee (senior directors at the client organization) to develop and implement a high level strategic initiative that could have wide-ranging impact on the client’s organization as well as like organizations at other institutions.
